Chapter 30
11 PM.
Ji-seok and Tae-woo rose from the bench where they had been waiting in front of the Dormitory Building.
The dormitory stood empty of students.
With the café and convenience store shuttered, the entire structure lay submerged in absolute darkness.
The two made their way to the parking lot, gathered their respective equipment, and headed toward the building.
But the Client, who had been circling the area with a flashlight, approached them.
“Are you beginning the work now?”
Ji-seok nodded in response to the question.
“Yes. It would be best if you waited elsewhere until we contact you.”
He answered courteously, inclining his head slightly in respect.
The Client nodded and turned away from the dormitory, walking toward another location.
“Let’s go.”
Ji-seok spoke to Tae-woo and began moving forward.
The two re-entered the Dormitory 1st Floor Lobby.
All the lights were extinguished, plunging the space into profound darkness.
Gooooooo—
Whiiiiing—
Within the empty dormitory building, a faint wind whispered with an eerie, desolate resonance.
Ji-seok slowly closed his eyes and sensed the spiritual energy surrounding him.
Meanwhile, Tae-woo activated his smart glasses.
All systems engaged, and a radar display materialized in the upper right corner of the smart glasses screen.
The two immediately switched on their respective flashlights and flashes to secure their visibility.
“They’ve realized we’ve come to capture them.”
“Yes, what?”
Tae-woo looked at Ji-seok in surprise at his words.
“They know we’ve come to catch them. Turn on that fluorescent light over there.”
He gestured casually with his chin toward the Corridor to the side.
Tae-woo approached the fluorescent light switch attached to the wall.
Click—
He flipped the switch upward.
Zzzzzt— zzzzzt— flicker— flicker—
The fluorescent light flickered erratically.
He furrowed his brow and switched on the lights in both corridor sections as well.
Click—
Bzzzzzz— flicker, flicker, flicker—
The other fluorescent lights were no different.
All of them flickered loudly and irregularly, as if suffering from poor contact.
That was when it happened.
Beneath the flickering lights, a woman appeared standing at the far end of the corridor.
Tae-woo tilted his head, wondering if there were still students remaining in this dormitory, and fixed his gaze upon her.
The distance was considerable—far beyond the twenty-meter detection range of the Ghost Radar—so he couldn’t make out her features.
Flicker— flicker— flicker—
But with each flicker of the fluorescent light, the woman strode rapidly toward Tae-woo.
Despite her limbs remaining perfectly still, she advanced with terrifying speed each time darkness fell.
This was unmistakably a ghost.
Whoooooosh—
Simultaneously, Tae-woo felt a violent gust of cold wind sweep past him.
He immediately drew the Spirit Blade and lowered his stance.
And just as the ghost reached him—
Whoooooosh—
A warm wind suddenly swept in from the side.
The ghost approaching Tae-woo was caught as if by a typhoon, hurled sideways, and slammed against the wall.
It was a phenomenon he had never witnessed before.
Tae-woo turned his head toward the source of the wind.
Whoooooosh—
What he saw was Ji Seok-i holding a fan in one hand.
He stood with an air of nobility, wielding an ornate fan of the sort shamans might use.
His appearance was reminiscent of a martial arts master wielding a fan as a weapon.
“A wild ghost. This dormitory seems to harbor many such stray spirits beyond the one we’re meant to handle.”
He approached the ghost with remarkable composure, moving deliberately.
Yet the ghost, its gray skin dripping translucent gray saliva, could not descend from the wall.
It appeared as though its limbs were bound.
Kyaaaaaaaa—
The spirit roared with its mouth gaping wide toward Ji-seok.
Simultaneously, its pupils shrank to the size of beans—a grotesque sight.
“Spirits like this one have no awareness of why they died or why they became spirits. They simply harbor blind hatred toward the living. Even if you attempt to guide them to the afterlife, it won’t work—they can’t remember what their grudge was. With spirits like this, it’s better to simply erase them.”
He withdrew a talisman card from his pocket and hurled it directly at the spirit’s head.
Whoooosh—
The coated talisman card spun through the air and embedded itself directly into the spirit’s head.
Screech— Fssssssss—
The spirit clinging to the wall dissipated into black smoke, starting from its head.
Thunk—
As the card fell back down, he caught it.
“Wow.”
Tae-woo couldn’t help but exclaim as he watched Ji-seok.
Though Ji-seok clearly disapproved of him and seemed difficult to work with—his character questionable—Tae-woo could instinctively sense that his skill was far from ordinary.
Despite having witnessed only a handful of exorcisms, the composure emanating from Ji-seok was something he had never detected in Ye-rim.
‘That’s right. Manager Yoon’s exorcisms feel solemn and wrathful, while Supervisor Ji-seok’s feel composed and graceful.’
He found himself curious about how Ji-seok would conduct combat if a Grade 3 or higher spirit appeared.
Click—
While Tae-woo marveled briefly, Ji-seok flipped the switch back down.
“The flickering just gets in the way. Let’s turn it off and move.”
“Yes, understood.”
Tae-woo nodded.
The two began to navigate through the darkened Dormitory Building.
* * *
The Dormitory Building was completely sealed off.
After three consecutive suicides, the students had been temporarily evacuated, leaving many rooms still filled with their belongings.
Because of this, Tae-woo and Ji-seok couldn’t simply open the dormitory room doors at will.
In the end, they were forced to leave the locked rooms untouched and search only through the ones left open.
Thump—
After finishing their search of the first floor, the two climbed to the second floor when they heard a strange sound echoing from a distance, and their eyes met.
“I’m not the only one hearing this, right?”
At Ji-seok’s question, Tae-woo nodded.
The two then shone their flashlights down the left corridor where the sound seemed to originate.
But they saw nothing.
Tae-woo’s Ghost Radar showed no response either.
Thump— Thump— Thump—
Only a dull sound echoed from the distance.
Though they couldn’t identify what it was, the rhythm was so regular it resembled the sound of some massive machinery.
“What is that sound?”
Tae-woo asked.
“I don’t know either. But one thing’s for certain—it’s definitely coming from a ghost.”
Ji-seok replied.
Suddenly, Tae-woo’s Ghost Radar activated.
It indicated a ghost was present behind them.
“Save me— I don’t want to die— Save me—”
At the same moment, a sinister male voice echoed from behind them.
Tae-woo tensed and quickly spun around, leading with his Spirit Blade.
Ji-seok likewise snapped his fan open with a sharp click and slowly turned to look behind him.
There, in the middle of the opposite corridor, stood a man with his neck twisted ninety degrees, blood dripping from his form as he stared blankly ahead.
“Save me— I don’t want to die— Save me—”
The ghost took a step forward and spoke.
Its voice echoed through the corridor once more, thick with malice.
Tae-woo gripped his blade firmly while watching Ji-seok’s expression, waiting for his judgment on how to proceed.
Had Ye-rim been with him, he would have charged in without hesitation, but Ji-seok operated differently.
Their approaches were fundamentally different.
“Save me—”
His approaching body was twisted in an unsettling manner.
Every joint creaked as though shattered, and the sight of him drawing near was profoundly grotesque.
Ji-seok slowly fanned himself and opened his mouth.
“A ghost who was bewitched by a Possession Spirit and drove itself to suicide. Are you suffering greatly from resentment and agony?”
He asked, but the ghost merely repeated the same words.
“Save me— I don’t want to die— save me—”
And with each word, it continued advancing one step at a time.
“Heh.”
Ji-seok shook his head and continued speaking.
“I had my suspicions, but this is the worst possible scenario.”
At his words, Tae-woo looked toward Ji-seok.
Ji-seok stared directly at the ghost as he offered his explanation.
“Whether Na Hee-jung is Grade 2 or Grade 3, I can’t say for certain, but in any case, she was using the Possession Spirit’s ability to drive living people to suicide. Ten of them over ten years.”
“Yes, that’s what you said.”
“Think about how much pain and suffering those people must have endured. Their suicides weren’t of their own will.”
“Then—?!”
“Exactly. They became ghosts bearing such intense resentment. They’d be at least Grade 3 Vengeful Spirits or higher.”
Ji-seok spoke with gravity.
Tae-woo’s eyes widened as he asked.
“Wait, if those ghosts are Grade 3 or higher, doesn’t that mean Na Hee-jung’s ghost is also Grade 3 or higher? Isn’t the zone commander always the highest-ranked ghost?”
“This isn’t the military. A ghost’s grade doesn’t determine whether it becomes the ‘commander’ of a zone. If a very ancient Grade 2 Bound Spirit has established its territory, then no matter how many Grade 4 or Grade 5 ghosts exist, that Bound Spirit is the boss of the zone. Of course— there are occasionally violent ghosts that even drive out the Bound Spirits, but regardless.”
Tae-woo drew out a talisman card in one hand.
In that instant— the ghost’s mouth opened impossibly wide as it lunged at Ji-seok and Tae-woo.
Shrieeeeeeek—
Ji-seok stepped back with one foot to brace himself, as if he had anticipated the move, and swung his fan with tremendous force.
Whoooooosh—
The dust coating the floor billowed up, swirling around the ghost.
But the ghost leaped effortlessly into the air and charged at Ji-seok like a living projectile.
Snap— Clatter clatter clatter—
Ji-seok hurled a talisman card directly at the ghost.
Whoooosh—
Yet the ghost vanished in an instant, and the talisman card cut through empty air.
Simultaneously, the ghost materialized behind Ji-seok, seized his head, and slammed him into the ground.
Crash—
A deafening sound echoed through the space.
Tae-woo didn’t merely observe—he immediately drew his blade.
Whoooosh—
The ghost’s torso twisted grotesquely, evading the strike.
Tae-woo pressed forward without pause, his blade moving with lethal speed.
Whoosh whoosh whoosh whoosh
The movements were extraordinarily swift, precise, and elegant.
He spun five hundred and forty degrees through the air while slashing, then dropped low to the ground and accelerated forward before executing an upward cut.
Yet the ghost evaded every attack, retreating steadily.
“Save me— I don’t want to die—”
Throughout the exchange, the ghost repeated the same words endlessly.
In that moment, Tae-woo found himself thinking that this ghost, too, was truly pitiful.
Forced into suicide against its own will, it had become this grotesque specter.
In the instant those thoughts crossed his mind, Tae-woo felt his blade slow.
Simultaneously, Ye-rim’s words surfaced in his memory.
‘If you carelessly show sympathy toward a ghost and expose a weakness in your resolve, the ghost’s consciousness could consume you entirely.’
At that very thought, the spirit seized Tae-woo by the throat and hurled him upward toward the ceiling.
CRASH—
Tae-woo’s head burst through the plaster ceiling.
“Ugh!”
Pain twisted his features.
In that instant, Ji-seok’s fan wind swept through once more.
The spirit released Tae-woo and staggered backward.
THUD—
Tae-woo crashed to the corridor floor.
Fragments of plaster rained down from the ceiling.
“Cough, cough.”
Tae-woo rose to his feet, coughing.
“Keep your mind sharp. If you’ve committed to capturing it, you can’t afford distractions.”
Ji-seok spoke from behind him.
Tae-woo nodded with grim resolve and gripped his blade.
