18. The World of a Forgotten Past
It was the Academy’s graduation day.
At thirteen, I stood alone in a daze before the academy gates.
Ever since I had thoroughly beaten Jerdi Viscount Yeong, no one had spoken to me. The teachers had merely sent a letter to the Duke and hadn’t properly disciplined me. My time at the Academy had been lonely, and returning home wasn’t something I particularly looked forward to either.
After waiting alone for some time, a carriage from the Count’s Manor arrived.
“Get in.”
Calaudin spoke without even dismounting from his horse. He had never been fond of riding in carriages, claiming they were suffocating. So I had no choice but to ride alone in the carriage.
As I climbed into the carriage and looked back, everyone else was receiving bouquets and congratulations from their families. I simply sat quietly in the carriage with my belongings and arrived at the Count’s Manor without a word.
It was dark when we arrived at the Count’s Manor.
As I stepped down from the carriage, Calaudin spoke.
“Ah, I submitted your marriage registration to the Imperial Palace a few days ago.”
“What?”
“Your marriage.”
I quietly lifted my gaze toward the window of my room in the Count’s Manor. A light was on, as if someone was there.
“She’s been staying in your room for the past few days.”
I immediately understood that the person Calaudin was referring to was my wife.
“I intended to bring her to the graduation ceremony, but she became too ill just before departure, so I left her at the Count’s Manor.”
“I see.”
Suddenly, at thirteen, I had acquired a wife, but I asked no questions. After all, I had gone to the Academy because Calaudin told me to, and I had returned because he told me to graduate and come back.
My life had always been this way. So if he said he had arranged my marriage, then that was simply how it was.
I had the servants bring my belongings up first, then took a walk around the Count’s Manor before deliberately entering my room slowly. In my own way, it was a consideration—by having my belongings brought up first, I hoped she wouldn’t be startled upon seeing me. So when I finally made my way to my room at a leisurely pace, I could see a girl barely propping herself up from the bed.
She was a cute girl with pink hair that fell to her waist, round purple eyes, and delicate features.
“Cough, cough.”
She covered her mouth with a handkerchief as she coughed, then hurriedly wiped her lips and looked at me.
“Um… hello.”
And she greeted me first.
“I’m Laria Rose Rostri… or rather, Laria Rose Icard now. Your name is Evan, right?”
I hesitated for a moment, unsure how to respond. It was because I had never had a casual conversation with anyone before.
“I’m one year older than you… and I haven’t been here long either.”
I was slightly surprised that she was older than me, as I had naturally assumed she was younger given her small and delicate frame.
“This room… I only realized after your belongings came up that it was originally your room. I carelessly put my things in here, and I’m sorry.”
It seemed she hadn’t known that this room was originally mine and that we would have to share it going forward. It appeared Calaudin hadn’t even explained that much to her. Then again, Calaudin had never given me any explanations either.
“It’s fine.”
I said bluntly. In fact, Laria had almost no belongings at all.
“You don’t have much either, so it doesn’t matter. I’ll wash up and organize my things before bed, so you go to sleep first. You’re not feeling well, right?”
Indeed, the girl called Laria had a rather pale complexion. Seeing her cough earlier, it was clear she wasn’t in good health.
This was a room I had stayed in whenever I took leave from the Academy, and sharing it with someone was certainly a bit inconvenient. I had always had a private room at the Academy.
After washing and changing into indoor clothes, I began organizing my books when I felt a gaze upon me. Furrowing my brow as I looked at the bed, Laria was rubbing her sleepy eyes and watching me.
“I told you to go to sleep first.”
“Um…”
Despite Evan’s blunt words, Laria even smiled slightly.
“You graduated from the Academy today, didn’t you?”
“Yeah.”
“I should have gone to pick you up with Father, but I’m sorry.”
Evan couldn’t understand why she was apologizing. So he didn’t answer at all, but she continued with a gentle smile.
“Congratulations on your graduation.”
Evan blinked, momentarily dazed.
It was something he hadn’t even realized he was waiting to hear. He thought he must be the only one who hadn’t heard those words of congratulation from the Academy.
“I’m sorry for saying it so late.”
Laria spoke kindly.
“If I had been even a little healthier, I would have gone with Father and told you in front of the Academy gates. It’s a shame.”
“Huh? Yeah.”
Evan felt heat rise to the back of his neck and averted his eyes from Laria. He felt terribly embarrassed.
“Let’s get along well from now on.”
Watching him unable to respond properly, Laria smiled softly.
“Here, you’re the only person I can trust.”
“…What?”
“Then, I’ll go to sleep first.”
Laria threw out those meaningful words and simply lay down, closing her eyes.
That night, Evan woke several times in the early morning because of Laria’s coughing. Yet despite this, he no longer felt it was uncomfortable to share a room with someone.
