Episode 6
What did I just see?
Hae Sung stood dazed, his head tilting slowly as though pulled by invisible strings.
“Y-yes, yes….”
Once Sa Hyeon finished speaking, he glanced back at the siblings.
“What are you two gawking at? Get moving before that bird-brained creature wakes up.”
“Y-yes! Thank you so much!”
The older sister nodded vigorously, grabbed her brother’s hand, and bolted for the Subway Station exit.
Meanwhile, Hae Sung remained transfixed, staring at Sa Hyeon with hollow eyes.
‘He just… attacked the Creature Falcon bare-handed? That doesn’t match a Physical-type Awakener’s profile at all….’
Sa Hyeon took a step forward, toward where the creature had flown.
Hae Sung lurched forward in alarm, reaching out to stop him.
“W-wait! Sa Hyeon, where are you going?! That’s dangerous!!”
He didn’t know how that attack had connected, but landing one blow hardly guaranteed victory.
The Creature Falcon was no common specimen—it ranked A-class at minimum, the kind that required a full raid team of at least five B-class Hunters. And since aerial combat was essential, approaching it at all was impossible without a Flight Skill.
That wasn’t all. After that punch, the beast had to be furious. Getting close would be suicide.
Yet Sa Hyeon remained unmoved.
“I need to finish it off.”
The creature Sa Hyeon pointed to had already regained consciousness, shaking its wings as it rose.
Even from a distance, its rage was palpable.
“Don’t go near it! Do you have a Flight Skill? Or maybe a Ranged Attack Skill?!”
“No.”
“Then how? You don’t even have a weapon!”
Sa Hyeon answered with perfect ease.
“I’ll make one as I go.”
“What? How are you supposed to make a weapon here—”
But Hae Sung’s question caught mid-breath.
Sa Hyeon bent down and picked something up from the ground.
“I’ll borrow this for a moment.”
Hae Sung’s eyes widened as he recognized the object.
It was the metal skewer he’d retrieved from the Fast Food Restaurant kitchen.
The very same one he’d thrown down carelessly while shielding the siblings.
“You’re going to use a… a skewer?”
Hae Sung corrected himself, embarrassed to call it a weapon.
The metal skewer was nothing more than a blunt piece of steel with a pointed end.
No matter how strong someone was, scratching the Creature Falcon’s tough hide with such a flimsy rod seemed impossible.
Whoooosh—
“Aagh!”
A sudden gust slammed into Hae Sung, making him stagger.
Sa Hyeon, who had been swinging the skewer experimentally through the air, turned toward where the wind came from.
The Creature Falcon had recovered.
Its fury undiminished, it flapped its wings, fixing its gaze on Sa Hyeon.
“A head the size of a house and nothing behind it. No learning ability whatsoever.”
Sa Hyeon’s mouth twisted in a sneer.
As the creature’s wingbeats continued, Hae Sung’s body swayed precariously—but Sa Hyeon stood motionless, his posture rigid.
Had his black hair not been whipping violently in the gale, one might have mistaken the air for perfectly still.
Vmmm— Vmmm—
A sharp vibration suddenly thrummed against his wrist.
Sa Hyeon and Hae Sung both glanced down at the Watch screen simultaneously.
[Protection Squad Team 1 has departed.]
[ETA to site: 3 minutes]
“Three minutes isn’t bad.”
Sa Hyeon raised an eyebrow slightly.
“Sa Hyeon, let’s just evade until the Hunters arrive!”
Hae Sung shouted, but Sa Hyeon waved him off with a dismissive gesture.
“Shut up. When the Protection Squad arrives, clear out the area around this intersection.”
The Creature Falcon’s body tensed as if it might lunge again at any moment.
“This should be enough.”
Sa Hyeon met the creature’s gaze directly, and in that same instant, he adjusted his grip on the metal skewer in his hand.
[Phantom Blacksmith (SS) skill activated!]
A new window materialized before his eyes, and his ashen irises began to turn red. The pupils flooded with crimson, as if blood itself were spreading through them.
Hae Sung, who had been watching the transformation as if entranced, let out a bewildered gasp.
“……Wh-what??”
Shhhhh—
Black smoke began to rise around the metal skewer Sa Hyeon was gripping.
By the time the smoke had spread so thickly that Sa Hyeon’s hand and the skewer vanished from view—
—the haze slowly cleared.
“No, wait, this can’t be—”
The moment the shape became visible again, Hae Sung’s eyes nearly bulged from their sockets.
What Sa Hyeon held in his hand was no mere metal skewer.
A blade that gleamed with silver brightness. A shaft that stretched long and elegant.
“……A spear?!”
A thin, flimsy piece of rebar had transformed in a single moment into a towering lance.
[Phantom Blacksmith (SS) skill in use]
A new window appeared in Sa Hyeon’s field of vision.
The Phantom Blacksmith.
A skill that could reshape any object into a weapon of his choosing.
Though it was temporary and its duration wasn’t particularly long, the high rank of the skill meant the result was comparable to a respectable A-grade item.
Sa Hyeon swung the spear lightly, as if testing its weight.
Whoosh—
With the sound of air splitting, the spear traced a clean arc as it spun.
“This’ll do just fine.”
As he murmured this, he thrust the spear forward with one hand, without hesitation, straight at the Falcon that was about to charge.
Squelch—! Shrieeeeek!
Along with the sickening sound of flesh tearing, the monster shrieked.
The spearpoint lodged perfectly in the creature’s left eye, and thick, crimson fluid dripped down the shaft.
Sa Hyeon withdrew the spear from the eye with an indifferent motion, pulling it free in one clean movement.
Shrieeeeek—!
A cry that pierced the eardrums like an awl.
“Ugh!”
Hae Sung let out a short cry and covered his ears.
“Not paying attention? You need to watch properly if you’re going to use this in a real operation later.”
When Sa Hyeon raised his voice, Hae Sung’s body flinched.
“…S-sir? Sir?!”
You mean me? Against a monster the size of a building?
“Large-scale monsters like this see their success rate double just by blocking half their field of vision. Understood?”
Hae Sung’s lips trembled as he struggled to find his voice.
Vroooooom—!
In the distance, the heavy rumble of an engine echoed out.
A fleet of black vans was speeding toward the intersection.
“The Protection Squad has arrived!”
Hae Sung exclaimed with relief.
The Hunter Association emblem was engraved on the hood. Though he’d been waiting for this arrival, Sa Hyeon’s face darkened with irritation.
“Making quite the entrance.”
As the engine noise grew louder, the Creature Falcon’s attention scattered. Its gaze—which had been dripping blood from its wounded left eye—turned toward the vehicles. Its massive wings were about to beat when—
“Eyes on me. We’re in the middle of training.”
Sa Hyeon stepped off the ground and shoved the Creature Falcon’s body back.
Whoosh— Crash!
The unresisting monster flew backward.
Its massive body slammed into the building across the street with a thunderous boom.
Just then, the Hunter Association vehicles came to a stop in front of Hae Sung, and hunters spilled out of them in a rush.
They all wore the same uniform.
A shield emblem on the chest—the symbol of a Defense-type Hunter—with a crisp orange line running from shoulder to sleeve.
It was the standard uniform of the Hunter Association’s Protection Squad.
“Hunter Hae Sung, are you all right? You’re standing fine, so I’d say you’re okay.”
A short-haired man with a gold badge on his shoulder rushed toward the two of them.
Behind him, the rest of his team methodically worked to secure the scene.
By all appearances, this short-haired hunter was running the operation.
Just then, the short-haired hunter spotted the monster writhing inside the building, and his eyelids flickered rapidly.
“How did the Pelcon end up like this….”
He looked back and forth between Hae Sung and asked in a trembling voice.
“Did you happen to do this to that Pelcon, Hunter Hae Sung…?”
The team members standing behind him exchanged glances, their eyes wide with shock.
“No, no!”
Hae Sung waved his hands frantically.
Then he pointed respectfully with both hands at Sa Hyeon, who stood at an odd angle.
“It wasn’t me—it was Sa Hyeon here who did it.”
The short-haired hunter’s gaze shifted to Sa Hyeon.
“Alone…against the Pelcon?”
The short-haired hunter studied Sa Hyeon with a bewildered expression.
A lean man standing on one leg, looking utterly disheveled.
A face he’d never seen before.
If someone had the skill to demolish a Creature Falcon single-handedly, there was no way he wouldn’t know of him.
“I did hear there was combat personnel on-site, but….”
His eyes swept from head to toe.
His face bore suspicion of this Sa Hyeon who had appeared so suddenly.
‘Is he a newly Awakened Hunter? I don’t recall seeing this face among the new recruits.’
He tilted his head, then decided to change his entire premise.
‘No, wait…. Maybe this Pelcon was just an unusually weak specimen.’
It seemed more likely than the probability of a rare A-rank Awakener suddenly appearing.
With an unfamiliar hunter and a frail office worker having faced a monster now pathetically embedded in a building, he assumed the situation was simple and, condescending in his charity, spoke again.
“Hunters dispatched on a guild raid are coming to assist. They’ll arrive within ten minutes, so you can leave with peace of mind.”
“You’re wasting time.”
A sharp rebuke came back immediately.
The short-haired hunter blinked blankly.
“What…what did you say?”
He looked confused, as if he’d misheared.
“What’s your Specialty?”
“…Are you asking about my Specialty right now?”
At Sa Hyeon’s abrupt question, the short-haired hunter’s brow furrowed.
Given that his face was unfamiliar, he seemed like a newly Awakened novice, yet he dared ask a distant senior about their Specialty first. His demeanor suggested wounded pride.
“I asked.”
As Sa Hyeon fixed him with an unwavering gray-eyed stare, the man involuntarily flinched.
“Hm.”
Then he cleared his throat, and with forced indifference, spoke in a mocking tone.
“Protective Barrier. Now, what about you?”
Sa Hyeon scanned him from top to bottom as if he hadn’t heard a word.
“I can see your limits. You’re useless to me.”
“What…what did you—”
As the short-haired hunter began to flare up, Sa Hyeon waved his hand dismissively.
“Stop loafing around here. Go help with the rescue.”
“What, what are you—”
The short-haired hunter let out an exasperated breath.
Whether he accepted it or not was irrelevant.
Sa Hyeon’s gaze had already fixed back on the Creature Falcon, which had begun to writhe again.
“Hey, you!”
The hunter pointed at Sa Hyeon as his voice grew louder.
“You might have a decent Specialty, but if you act cocky like this, you’ll get your nose broken, understand?!”
The hunter’s face flushed crimson as he ranted. Sa Hyeon’s brow creased further.
“Captain, please stop.”
Hae Sung grabbed the short-haired hunter’s arm to restrain him, but the man shook off his grip roughly and shouted.
“How dare a rookie show such disrespect. Do you think the Hunter world is that easy to navigate?”
“Seems pretty easy to me.”
“What, you little bastard?!”
He bristled, stepping forward with a threatening motion.
Hae Sung moved in front of him, his face uneasy.
“Team Captain, please calm down first―”
“Enough.”
Sa Hyeon cut off Hae Sung mid-sentence.
He finally tore his gaze away from the monster and turned it toward the short-haired hunter.
Then he spoke in a low voice.
“I’ve had my doubts ever since you showed up so loudly in a field where monsters are sensitive to noise.”
Sa Hyeon took a long stride forward. He was taller by a head. The short-haired hunter flinched and stumbled backward as Sa Hyeon suddenly loomed close.
“And then you squawk and whine about how annoyed you are, acting full of yourself just because you’ve got a bit of power. That’s exactly why you’re easy to deal with.”
“…! You’ve said enough―”
The Team Captain raised his voice, his neck flushed, about to speak.
Screeeee!
The Creature Falcon’s gaze snapped directly toward them. It had caught the commotion.
“Ah!”
In that split second of realization, the Team Captain’s body trembled.
The monster launched itself like a bullet toward them. A fierce wind swept through as shattered fragments of the structure came flying.
“!!”
“Everyone, move!”
The Team Captain shouted and deployed a transparent Protective Barrier.
But Sa Hyeon was faster.
He sprinted forward as if folding the ground beneath him.
In an instant, he and the monster met head-on.
He pushed off the ground, leaping up, and then—twisting his body—drove his heel down hard onto the creature’s enormous head.
Boom!
A violent tremor shook the pavement.
The Creature Falcon was driven straight into the road.
A crater as vast as a meteor impact opened up in the asphalt.
…….
The Team Captain swallowed slowly, his throat bobbing.
Plink—
In the silence, only the sound of debris pinging against the Protective Barrier echoed.
