Calamitous Artifacts from Urban Legends Obsess Over Me — Episode 29
When Ujoo was a child, his empty house somehow carried a distinctly ominous air.
Perhaps it wasn’t that anything was actually there, but merely that Ujoo had felt it that way at the time.
From the half-closed bathroom door, something seemed about to leap out.
In the darkness beneath the bed, something surely lurked. Footsteps seemed to echo from somewhere, again and again.
Imagination fed the fear.
Crash!
Now that same house was being demolished into rubble.
With each swing of the Wooden Branch, walls burst open and furniture came crashing down in splinters.
There was a peculiar pleasure in destroying with his own hands the very thing that had frightened him as a child.
Screech!
Things crawled out from under beds or fell from the darkness, but before he could do much of anything, they shattered to pieces under the Steel Pipe.
Swinging the Wooden Branch in such a frenzy, Ujoo eventually found himself breaking through the apartment wall and stepping outside.
Normally, breaking through an apartment wall should reveal either the outside or another home.
But before Ujoo stretched only thick darkness.
Like breaking through a map in a video game.
“Huff.”
Only then did Ujoo stop swinging the Wooden Branch. There was nothing left within reach.
‘Where am I?’
Ujoo slowly looked around.
The apartment he’d broken through was no longer visible. Only endless darkness stretched before him.
As if he were trapped somewhere.
‘My head feels clearer somehow.’
Yet his mood was decent enough.
When he’d first opened his eyes in the apartment, his mind had been foggy, but now it was as clear as if the mist had lifted.
The excitement had also settled, allowing Ujoo to calmly consider his current situation.
‘It definitely feels like I was dragged somewhere.’
There was no reason an old apartment where he’d once lived would exist inside the Chuncheon Branch.
Still, the fortunate part was that even though he’d been dragged to this strange place and taken on the form of a child, the Artifact remained intact.
Though its appearance had changed somewhat.
‘Right. The Artifact.’
With this thought, Ujoo reached up to touch his own face.
His fingers felt something hard.
‘The mask is still here.’
Before, he’d been too frantic to notice, but the mask remained firmly affixed to his face.
Though its shape seemed to have changed somewhat like the Steel Pipe, its function should have remained largely intact.
‘This must be something operating on a spiritual level.’
Taking the form of a child, waking in a place from his memories—the odds of this happening in reality were low.
“But I broke apart the whole apartment and came out. And I still haven’t woken up?”
That meant there was still work to be done. And in a situation like this where he didn’t know where to go, the mask was what could help.
Ujoo lowered his hand from where he’d been touching the mask and concentrated.
The Mask of Bangsang could reveal what was invisible.
Whoosh.
The moment golden light flowed from the mask on his face, what had been hidden became visible.
A faint glow was emanating from far away.
Ujoo moved his short legs and ran toward it.
Then, all at once.
Whoosh.
White mist-like something flickered past, and suddenly Ujoo stood in a completely different place.
It was a Corridor.
An uncomfortably pristine white Corridor. And scattered throughout it, bright red blood.
It was obviously the scene of something terrible.
Thump, thump.
Then. Footsteps echoed down the Corridor.
Ujoo gripped the Steel Pipe tightly in his hand and looked in that direction. A moment later.
“Huff.”
A figure emerged.
A woman walking toward him from the far end of the Corridor, exhaling pale smoke from her mouth.
The moment Ujoo saw her, his eyes widened.
‘Hwaryeon?’
She was unmistakably Hwaryeon.
Though she appeared several years younger than she did now, her features were similar enough that he recognized her instantly.
Hwaryeon, a cigarette dangling from her lips as she walked, seemed to notice Ujoo’s presence only at the last moment and froze.
“A child?”
“Team Lead!”
“Team Lead?”
Hwaryeon tilted her head slowly, then drew something from her pocket.
It was a black wooden branch.
“So it was still there.”
Her movements and tone seemed somehow distant from what he’d witnessed when she found that lost child.
Only then did Ujoo look down at himself.
He didn’t know what had happened, but here he stood—a child who had materialized in a pristine white corridor now splattered with blood on all sides.
An eerie mask covered his face, and in one hand he clutched a steel pipe.
‘Anyone would think something was wrong.’
His appearance didn’t merely seem suspicious—it verged on the genuinely anomalous.
Shrieeeeeeeek—!
Thud-thud-thud-thud-thud!
Then it happened.
A terrible shriek echoed from far away, followed by something revealing itself with a weighty, sickening sound.
It was a creature of indescribable horror.
As if a dozen human bodies had been haphazardly fused together.
Arms and legs—heads too—jutted out in all directions, grotesquely.
—Ah, it hurts.
—Help me help me help me help me help me.
—Where is this? I want to go home. Please send me home.
—Mommy—!
What made it even more horrifying was that those faces continued shrieking, their mouths wide open.
Watching this, Hwaryeon exhaled a deeper plume of smoke.
No fear registered in her expression. What rose far more powerfully was sorrow—and regret.
—Um, sister, I’m sorry.
A thin, frail voice had spoken.
Ujoo’s gaze fixed on one of the heads embedded in the creature’s body. Pale complexion, long dark hair. And—a face that bore Hwaryeon’s likeness.
Hwaryeon’s voice emerged low and hollow.
“That’s what I keep telling you—quit this strange job already.”
He couldn’t understand everything, but even from this brief exchange, much became clear.
This was Hwaryeon’s past. And she appeared trapped within it, unable to break free.
The way she’d reacted when he called her “Team Lead”—as if questioning what he meant—proved it.
‘I was the same once.’
When Ujoo had first awakened in that apartment, his memories had been hazy too.
If he hadn’t continued to grip that wooden branch in his hand, he might never have escaped.
—H, Hana, let me become—
Thud, thud, thud!
The creature lunged forward again.
Hwaryeon stood frozen, watching. Her past self must have overcome this somehow—that was why she was still alive now.
That had to be why.
Should he wait for her to surmount this on her own?
‘Why should I?’
This wasn’t some trial bestowed upon a protagonist. This was someone’s manipulation, plain and simple.
Staying still would only play into their hands.
Crack!
Having decided in an instant, Ujoo pushed off the ground and charged forward.
“No—”
Hwaryeon reached out, only now perceiving what he was doing.
But before she could stop him, Ujoo had already closed the distance to the charging creature and swung the wooden branch with all his might.
Crash—!
In a single blow, he sent the creature flying.
It rocketed backward faster than it had advanced, smashed into the wall, and began to writhe before slowly crumbling to dust that scattered into the air.
Then Hwaryeon spoke.
“Ujoo…?”
“Yes. Team Lead.”
Ujoo turned back to look at Hwaryeon, whose expression was still dazed, and spoke.
“I’m Ujoo. I suspect we’re inside your Nightmare Realm.”
At those words, Hwaryeon blinked and noticed the cigarette in her hand—one that was already lit.
“A cigarette… I quit more than five years ago.”
“Then this memory must be from even further back than that.”
“That’s right.”
Hwaryeon ended the conversation there, dropped the cigarette from her hand, and stamped it out.
“Damn, it’s been so long. Tastes disgustingly good.”
She then looked at Ujoo with a somewhat clearer expression and spoke.
“Anyway, so we were dragged into a Nightmare Realm. How did you end up here?”
“I went back to my childhood apartment, destroyed it, wandered around, and eventually came here.”
“That’s just like you.”
Hwaryeon smiled faintly as she spoke.
“Then why don’t we destroy this place too and get out?”
“Sure, let’s do it.”
Without hesitation, Ujoo swung a Wooden Branch at one of the walls.
Bang, bang, bang!
After swinging the branch a few times, the wall crumbled away, and once again a vast expanse of black space opened up before them.
“Let’s go.”
“Yeah.”
The two of them immediately entered that space. And the moment Hwaryeon stepped foot into it, she spoke.
“Do you remember? Before we were dragged here?”
“Yes, I do.”
Ujoo recounted what he remembered, and Hwaryeon nodded.
“I stayed until the very end. I was wandering around alone. Then I arrived in front of the Director’s Office. The moment I opened the door, I think I was dragged here.”
“What about Chungwoo?”
“I’m not sure. At the time, I thought I’d come out to investigate on my own.”
It seemed that the moment they were dragged into this place, they vanished from other people’s memories.
More precisely, it appeared to be a power that only worked within the branch.
“Then we should probably find the other two and bring them out with us.”
“I don’t think that’ll be necessary.”
“What?”
“Look over there.”
Hwaryeon pointed to one side.
Ujoo looked in that direction and his eyes widened. Baekho and Chungwoo were walking toward them.
“Hwaryeon! Ujoo!”
They spotted the two of them and waved cheerfully.
As the distance closed, Baekho asked.
“Looks like you managed to escape all right!”
“Thanks to Ujoo here. Ujoo, what do they look like to you?”
“They look like ordinary people to me.”
Ujoo answered while observing them through his mask.
If the two of them were Anomalies in disguise, Ujoo would have already seen through their true forms.
“But it seems like getting out of here is another matter entirely.”
“Right. Even though all four of us escaped the Nightmare Realm, we’re still maintaining it.”
Then Chungwoo, who had been quiet until now, spoke up.
“I can open a path.”
Chungwoo’s complexion looked particularly poor. Likely, he too had witnessed memories of the past before escaping.
In any case, everyone nodded at Chungwoo’s words.
Chungwoo slowly opened the Box he held in his hands.
From within it emerged a Pale Doll, crawling out sluggishly.
Thump.
It began to move its hands forward slowly, bracing itself against the ground.
Whoooosh.
In the next moment, the darkness surrounding the doll began to be sucked inward.
And so a bright gap revealed itself.
The moment Chungwoo saw it, he spoke.
“We need to go now.”
“Got it. Let’s move.”
“Yes!”
They all moved with practiced speed, as if this wasn’t their first time facing something like this.
Ujoo threw himself toward the bright gap alongside them.
Whoosh!
Then bright light wrapped around his body.
When his senses cleared, Ujoo found himself inside a narrow office.
“Where is this…?”
“The Director’s Office. Looks like that was the source of it all.”
Hwaryeon’s voice came from beside him. Ujoo looked ahead—then his body went rigid.
A middle-aged man sat in the chair.
With what looked like a ring clenched between his teeth.
“Director Baekwon…?”
At Chungwoo’s voice, Ujoo realized the man was the director of this Chuncheon Branch.
“What’s that ring?”
“I’ve never seen anything like it.”
They spoke in grave tones, all their eyes fixed on the object.
The Director’s Office was twisted in ways that begged not to be examined too closely—yet none of them so much as glanced at the warped surroundings.
Ujoo was no exception.
‘That ring.’
It was the ring that drew his attention.
An ominous aura poured from it in waves.
Then, in that moment—
Boom-boom-boom!
Suddenly a violent force erupted from the ring, hurling everyone backward.
Ujoo stumbled back several steps. When he regained his footing, he realized he was alone in the Director’s Office.
—How did you endure it?
A voice leaked from the director’s gaping mouth.
But it was nothing like the director’s voice—thick and grating, like metal scraped across concrete.
—No, wait. The opposite. I pulled you in instead.
“A Demon…?”
Ujoo narrowed his eyes as he spoke.
At first, he’d been uncertain.
But after everything he’d experienced reaching this point, and seeing the situation now, the word crystallized in his mind.
The voice immediately cackled with laughter.
—Correct! Do you want a prize?
“No. I’m going to crush you and leave.”
It laughed again, that same grating cackle.
—Do as you wish! I cannot be killed, regardless. Only the souls bound to me can perish.
The voice continued.
—The flesh and spirit of everyone here are already under my dominion. To kill me is to kill them.
At those words, Ujoo’s face hardened like stone. He understood now what had become of the missing people.
—Yes. This place is already my domain. I have manifested here through six sacrifices and six innocents. You cannot touch me. So be grateful you survived, and leave.
“What happened to the others?”
—Did you expect me to answer that?
It was then that Ujoo understood: the Steel Pipe alone wouldn’t solve this.
He could bludgeon that thing to death.
But he couldn’t save the people it held captive. And he was suddenly worried about Hwaryeon and the others who had vanished.
Yet there was something the creature didn’t know.
Ujoo had no intention of compromising with any Anomaly.
Crackle—
In an instant,
Ujoo held a thick book in one hand—emanating power far more sinister than the ring itself.
—Wait. You.
The voice turned its attention to him, but too late.
Ujoo ignored it, gazing down at the book that had opened of its own accord.
Once again, the book’s contents became clear to him—not through reading, but through pure understanding.
“You said you can’t be killed.”
Ujoo spoke.
The creature had claimed it could not die as long as it inhabited a human body.
As long as it remained possessing that form, it could not be directly harmed.
“Then I simply won’t kill it.”
And the Necronomicon is riddled with methods to inflict eternal torment instead of a peaceful, gentle death.
-If you recite such an Incantation, your own soul won’t come out unscathed!
The Demon spoke hurriedly.
But Ujoo paid it no mind.
The last time he’d wielded an Incantation, he’d been fine. It wasn’t baseless confidence that he’d be fine this time too.
It was simply that his mood had soured.
He hated the sight of that creature boasting it couldn’t harm him.
“Great Being who dwells within the nebula.”
So Ujoo opened his mouth.
Without hesitation, he began to recite the catastrophic Incantation.
Threats only mean something if you can show you’re actually capable of carrying them out.
-Wait! I’m going back! I’ll withdraw from here!
“Great Being slumbering in the abyss.”
-I’ll release the humans!
“This lowly servant prays to you.”
Ujoo didn’t stop. He continued the Incantation.
Just as before, as he pressed forward, he felt an immense gaze descending from above.
The same gaze he’d felt when reciting Incantations at Sagyeong Station and at the Hope Meditation Center.
This Incantation mercifully required no Sacrifice or anything of the sort.
Only the moment he finished reciting.
It would receive Eternal Torment.
As he continued chanting the words,
-Hyaaaaaaaaaah!
Suddenly, a pallid form burst forth from the Director’s body.
It was something with the massive frame of an ox and the face of a human. What tore out at terrifying speed immediately lunged toward Ujoo, intent on forcing him to stop the Incantation.
It was exactly the moment Ujoo had been waiting for.
Crash!
In that instant, the Steel Pipe came down hard on the pallid form.
But this time, it didn’t scatter or dissipate with a single blow. It only slammed flat against the ground.
Ujoo pinned the open Necronomicon on top of it and spoke.
“Suffer eternally.”
It wasn’t an Incantation or anything of the sort.
It was an ultimatum.
The creature pinned beneath the Necronomicon and Steel Pipe shrieked.
Ujoo began to whisper again to help it make its decision.
“In the name of the abyss and the nebula. Eternal blessing to…….”
-I’m going back! I’ll go back! I’ll undo everything and leave! Just spare me!
“Just spare you?”
-Yes!
At that, Ujoo pressed harder with the hands holding the book and the Steel Pipe.
“No.”
