Episode 10
Three months into her life, Aran’s mobility had improved enough that she could venture to the Main Palace, where she finally caught news of the Hyeonmu Palace she’d been so eager to hear about.
The palace had sent a letter to Cheong-un announcing the birth of their youngest.
“Their youngest took on human form less than a week after hatching?”
At Cheong-un’s words, Hee-rim nodded gravely and held out another letter.
“We’ve also received word from our lord, and it seems the child has already manifested a Supernatural Ability.”
Born mere moments ago, and already possessing a human body and wielding a Supernatural Ability?
Aran pretended to play with Yeon while circling the area, but her curiosity got the better of her—her ears perked up involuntarily.
There—that exceptionally talented youngest. What was the name again? Could it be Tae-o?
“Since the Northern Palace operates on pure meritocracy, there’s been considerable talk within the palace about the acting lord’s position becoming unstable,” Hee-rim continued.
“Come now. The acting lord won’t yield so easily.”
“The situation is quite unusual in several respects.”
Hee-rim lowered his voice and went on.
“The Hyeonmu Clan doesn’t typically have sparse offspring. After each Spawning Season, the number of children increases by at least three or four.”
“And?”
“This time, there is only one child—Tae-o alone.”
Gasp! Tae-o!
So it really is Tae-o!
Aran felt like shouting for joy.
Over the past month, she’d interrogated Hee-rim and learned the names of all the heirs of the Four Divine Beasts Palaces, yet she’d found no mention of anyone named Tae-o.
Hyeon Ui-cheon…
The task she’d come into this life to accomplish had finally been born.
He seemed quite exceptional—but would he need her help?
Besides, she was already raising Yeon. And Min, too.
How many children was this body supposed to raise alone?
Aran grumbled quietly to herself, treating the Azure Dragon Clan twins—whom no one had asked her to raise—as naturally as if they were her own offspring.
“Then I’ve won, haven’t I?”
Cheong-un unfolded the paper casually before the grave-faced Hee-rim, apparently preparing to draft a reply to the Hyeonmu Palace.
“Sir?”
“I obtained three youngest children at once.”
Their youngest gained human form at birth and manifested a Supernatural Ability, yet he counted this as mere overwhelming numbers…
Hee-rim shook his head at his lord’s self-satisfied boasting, but a thought suddenly occurred to Aran.
She plucked out the most intact Feather from the few just beginning to grow in, and brought it to Cheong-un.
“Hmm?”
Cheong-un’s brown eyes turned toward the youngest who had suddenly appeared.
For someone who claimed to be his mother, Cheong-un still understood almost none of what Aran said.
She couldn’t keep calling the busy Hee-rim every time, so even knowing it was futile, Aran persisted with stubborn sincerity in her attempts.
“Chirp!”
(Mother! Tell them the Azure Dragon Clan has a feathered youngest too!)
Her real intention was to make sure Tae-o learned of her existence somehow.
Given that the Hyeonmu Spirit had sent a messenger snake this far, the spirit might have interfered with the child as well.
But Cheong-un only looked puzzled.
Yet in the moment he tilted his head, examining the Feather, a vision suddenly descended before his eyes.
The lord’s chamber—decorated to Cheong-un’s taste with jade and stone—abruptly grew cold and dark, and a hexagonal table of dark rosewood materialized upon the ebony floor.
Upon it lay an abundance of rare treasures and jewels.
Then a baby with jet-black hair toddled forward and reached among those precious gifts to pluck up a white Feather.
“Huh…?”
Cheong-un froze upon seeing the child’s green eyes.
The vision of the Hyeonmu Palace faded away as though washed clean.
“Hmm…”
What in the world was that?
Should he enclose this Feather with his reply?
While Cheong-un struggled to interpret the puzzling Future Sight he’d witnessed.
Aran gave up.
From her perspective, Cheong-un simply didn’t understand her at all, sitting there in vacant silence.
Right—this dragon wouldn’t comprehend my words. Then there’s nothing for it but to resort to… body language!
Aran sprang into action at once.
“Chirp, chirp.”
(Mom, please listen to what I’m saying.)
After speaking earnestly, she still stretched one of her short wings to point at Cheong-un.
“Chirp.”
(At the Azure Dragon Palace.)
Next, she pointed to herself.
“Chirp, squawk!”
(Aran is here too!)
Then, with both wings spread wide, she spun once in place and presented herself.
(The utterly magnificent Vermillion Bird Aran!)
She even rustled her wings proudly as she displayed them.
“Chirp, chirp, squawk!”
(That youngest of that household absolutely must know that I am here!)
Well? You understand now, don’t you?
Contrary to Aran’s pleased expression, both Cheong-un and Hee-rim burst into laughter.
“Pfft, puh-hahahaha!”
There was nothing funny about it—so why were they laughing?
While Aran stood bewildered, Cheong-un turned to Hee-rim with tears streaming down his laughing face.
“Hee-rim, what do you think our daughter is trying to say?”
“Ahem, ahem.”
Hee-rim, who could no longer refute the claim that he was just a baby bird’s youngest, cleared his throat with an expression mirroring his lord’s.
“Ah, yes. In my judgment… it seems like no matter how accomplished the Hyeonmu youngest might be, Aran is the finest.”
“Chirp?”
(What? That’s not it!)
Aran was flabbergasted, but Cheong-un readily agreed with his retainer.
“It sounds like that to you too, doesn’t it? To me as well.”
“Chirp!”
(That’s not what I mean! Mom, please—just listen to me!)

Ten days later, at the Hyeonmu Palace.
The Great Lord Hyeon Ui-cheon had gathered congratulatory letters and gifts sent from all corners of the continent and summoned Tae-o.
“Tae-o, gifts have arrived from all across the realm to celebrate your birth. Shall we have a look at them?”
The child who had shown miracles from the moment he rose from the underground springs was now able to walk after merely a month, and already expressed his intentions with striking clarity.
Moreover, with each passing day his appearance grew more lovely, and there was not a soul who would not turn their head upon seeing him.
Hyeon Ui-cheon, who had gained a youngest son in his twilight years, was utterly enchanted by the boy and hardly knew what to do with himself.
“If there is anything you wish to have, take it freely. All of it is yours.”
The child’s eyes, each a different color, gazed steadily across the tabletop.
Upon the great hexagonal table sat a wealth of treasures: Gold Ingots and Jade Bracelets molded in Hyeonmu shapes, silken quilts and finest porcelain, rare medicinal herbs and precious elixirs, and special treasures sent from each of the Four Divine Beasts Palaces.
Of course, there were also sweets, rice cakes, fruits, and candies aplenty for the child to enjoy, so Ui-cheon watched and waited as if presiding over an early Dol Grabbing Ceremony, eager to see what Tae-o would choose.
Presently, a small hand reached out unsteadily toward the Azure Jade Wooden Box that had been sent from the Azure Dragon Palace.
Within lay an Elixir Pill specially crafted by the Azure Dragon Palace, two Dragon Scales each a different color, and—oddly enough—a single Feather.
Ui-cheon had assumed Tae-o would reach for the glittering, vividly colored Dragon Scales. But.
“Mmm?”
The child picked up the plain white Feather instead.
“Ha ha, you like that one?”
Ui-cheon felt oddly relieved and broke into laughter.
Had Tae-o chosen the Elixir Pill or a rare medicinal treasure, it would certainly have pleased him, yet it would have troubled him as well.
A child born so extraordinarily gave rise to public concern for one singular reason: he seemed far too unchildlike.
But Tae-o had chosen an unremarkable Feather—likely drawn to its soft and unfamiliar texture.
Of course, Cheong-un had added a postscript to his letter mentioning that he had adopted a new bird Supernatural Ability user as his youngest, but that was nonsense Tae-o could not possibly understand.
As the child nodded, his fine, curly hair dark as ebony rustled softly above his round forehead.
“Yes, it’s mine.”
His small hand clenched tight, concealing the delicate Feather within his fist.
At the gesture—as if he feared someone might snatch it away—Ui-cheon laughed once more.
“Of course, my son. It’s all yours.”

At that same moment, in the Azure Dragon Palace.
Aran shivered unexpectedly, as though a chill had gripped her.
Why on earth was she feeling this cold in May, the height of summer?
“Chirp…….”
(When you grow old, you ought to die…….)
Cheong-un, passing nearby with Hui, heard the sound and pricked up his ears.
“What’s the matter?”
He shook his head at his father’s puzzled question.
“It’s nothing, sir. It’s just that since Aran is a different species, her chirps sound rather peculiar to me sometimes.”
Surely Aran hadn’t said on purpose that father should die when he grows old…….
Once again, the Azure Dragon Palace was simply accumulating more and more misunderstandings.
