The Necromancer School’s Summoning Prodigy — Chapter 19
Simon withdrew two Lanterns from his Subspace, holding one himself and placing the other in the Skeleton’s bony grasp.
“Let’s go.”
The Skeleton led the way, and Simon followed close behind.
Upon entering the Ancient Ruins, he found nothing but darkness. The cold seeping from the stone floor seemed to travel up through his feet and into his legs.
With no railings in sight, he moved cautiously, acutely aware that a single misstep would mean certain death.
‘This is…….’
As he descended the stairs, he spotted indecipherable characters carved into the walls.
Yet somehow, the script looked familiar. Had he seen it recently?
Simon searched his memory carefully.
‘That’s it—Ancient Runic Language!’
It resembled the very script Eric had explained during Dark Magic Theory class.
So these were ancient ruins? But why were they located near Kizen?
Pondering these many unanswered questions, Simon continued his descent.
Tap.
At last, he reached the bottom of the staircase and felt solid ground beneath his feet. He had descended quite far—when he shone the Lantern upward, the ceiling remained invisible.
He needed to expand his search range. Simon summoned a second Skeleton, handed it a Lantern, and issued orders to scout the area.
Simon himself walked about, illuminating his surroundings with his Lantern. The walls and floor were densely covered in Ancient Runic Language.
‘With runic inscriptions on this scale…….’
The ruins themselves were essentially a massive magical mechanism.
Click. Click.
One of the Skeletons signaled that it had discovered something. Simon rushed toward it immediately.
‘What is this?’
In the center of the rune-covered chamber stood an altar, and atop it rested a skull.
Simon set his Lantern down on the altar and carefully brushed dust from the skull.
‘…….’
A strange tingling sensation crept up his arm.
Though Simon’s knowledge of Undead was limited, his instincts told him immediately.
This was the remains of an Undead so ancient its age was incalculable, and terribly, dangerously powerful.
Simon carefully lifted the skull.
Clatter-clatter-clatter!
“Whoa!”
The moment he raised the skull, bones cascaded from the ceiling. Simon quickly jumped backward to avoid the deluge.
“Don’t be scared,” he muttered, steadying himself.
The Skeletons approached and shone their Lanterns onto the floor. Simon stared intently at the scattered bones, then picked up one from the ground.
“……Number Two?”
Simon murmured to himself as he fitted the bone beneath the skull.
It clicked into place with perfect precision, like a puzzle piece finding its match.
‘…….’
A strange thrill began to rise from deep within his chest.
He wanted to assemble this Undead. If he did, he had no way of knowing how it would awaken, or what harm it might inflict upon him.
And yet, there are moments in life when one must boldly wager everything—and Simon felt with utter conviction that this was precisely such a moment.
With resolve crystallized, Simon placed the skull back on the altar and pressed his hand against the palm-shaped marking beneath it. Then, as before, he summoned his Dark Aura.
A deep, thrumming hum filled the chamber.
“Ugh!”
He had barely channeled his Dark Aura when it was violently sucked into the altar—as if his very lifeblood was being drained away.
The altar pulsed with a deep blue-black light, and thin strands of azure flame kindled within the skull’s eye sockets.
‘Hmm. Is this not yet complete?’
Simon held the Number Two bone up to the skull.
With a sharp click, it snapped into place as if drawn by a magnet—the characteristic Gravitational Pull that emanates from Skeleton-type Undead was clearly at work.
‘Good.’
Simon set the skull down and began in earnest.
Moving as though entranced, he fitted bone after bone together with a dexterity he’d never known before.
He connected the cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral, and coccygeal vertebrae in sequence to form the spine, then linked the scapulae, clavicles, and humerus across the front, adding ribs to build out the upper body.
Below, he took the pelvis and attached it beneath the sacrum to form the hip structure. The femur, tibia, and patella connected in turn, and the legs gradually took shape.
‘All that time spent drilling Summoning Arts from morning onward has finally paid off!’
Though not entirely certain, this Skeleton bore the bone structure of a human. Simon’s instinct, reinforced by his knowledge of Summoning Arts, allowed him to assemble the bones without hesitation.
But this Skeleton was extraordinarily tall.
Kneeling as he worked, Simon soon found himself crouching, then standing on his tiptoes, and finally clambering atop the altar itself, grunting with effort as he continued.
He wished the Skeleton would bend down to help, but it paid no heed to his commands. The moment its legs were complete, it simply stood up on its own.
‘I should have just assembled the arms first!’
Simon grunted through the final limbs until the skeleton was complete. Then, stepping back at a distance, he gazed at it with a mixture of pride and awe.
“Wow…”
A massive skeleton, well over two meters tall, stood before him like a monument. The sight drew an involuntary gasp—yet still it did not move.
“Now what?”
Simon stood with folded arms, lost in thought, when—
A brilliant light tore open the air!
Moonlight poured down from the ceiling like a luminous curtain.
The moment that pale glow touched the skeleton’s skull, the hollow sockets ignited with flame, burning like torches come to life.
[Heh. Ha! Hahahahahaha!]
With that colossal laugh, the floor and walls of the Ancient Ruins trembled. The runic inscriptions peeled away from the stone, flowing like liquid silk to drape across the skeleton’s frame.
The runes siphoned into the skeleton’s bones, absorbing into the marrow itself.
[At last! At last I have returned!]
The piercing cry made Simon clap his hands over his ears. The Dark Aura radiating from the skeleton’s form resembled a violent wave threatening to crash through the chamber.
[Who has awakened me!]
The skeleton’s skull swiveled on its axis. It turned its gaze toward Simon, who pressed his back against the wall.
Thud. Thud.
The towering presence advanced. Then it thrust its head forward, bringing its face inches from Simon’s to study him intently.
Simon had to exert every ounce of will not to scream.
[State your name, human.]
“S-Simon Polentia.”
The skeleton tilted its skull to one side.
[Polentia, you say……?]
Khahahahahaha!
That metallic laugh echoed through the entire ruin. Cold sweat beaded on Simon’s brow.
[Ah! Could you be a descendant of Richard!]
“No.”
Simon steadied his pounding heart before speaking.
“I’m his son.”
[Hahahaha! Yes! Yes! So that’s it! I thought I recognized that Dark Aura! Only Richard himself could awaken me!]
The skeleton turned its back. A cloak of shadow, like something woven from darkness itself, fluttered in its wake.
“……Who are you?”
Now it was Simon’s turn to ask. The skeleton stopped in its tracks and turned back, a grin spreading across its skull.
The fact that a skeleton could wear an expression at all was strange—yet there it was, unmistakable.
Its jaw hung open, its hollow nose seemed to flare with interest, and those burning eyes blazed with unmistakable curiosity—as alive and human as any living face.
[I am Peer. Administrator of the Legion.]
Peer spoke with evident pride.
[Once, I trampled across the continent alongside your father Richard!]
Simon’s eyes widened in recognition.
Father’s Undead—still surviving after all this time!
Peer, laughing heartily, thrust his skull forward once more.
[But first, tell me—who guided you to this place?]
His tone had grown sharp, cutting.
The question felt like a trial. Simon swallowed hard before answering.
“Neftis Arkbold.”
[Ah.]
Peer’s jaw lifted in what might have been a smile.
[Hehehehe, so that’s how it happened! That woman would indeed do such a thing! Excellent!]
A furious gust tore through the chamber!
Light flooded the Ancient Ruins as the very air screamed. The atmosphere itself seemed to cry out in exultation.
[Enter into a Contract with me, Simon Polentia! And lead the Legion!]
Father’s Undead threw his arms wide, his voice booming.
[The Legion shall become your will, trampling all that stands before you! Every creature under heaven shall kneel beneath your feet and bow their heads in submission!]
The voice, trembling with exhilaration, made the ruin resound like a struck bell.
[Yet know this—you shall walk a path drenched in blood! Such is your destiny! Son of Richard, are you prepared to lead the Legion!]
Simon’s face twisted with doubt. He bit his lip. Around him, Peer circled with a sinister smile.
[Are you afraid? Trembling with dread? What calculations run through that boy’s mind as he stands upon the threshold of power!]
Once his father’s strength, though he still called it so—a power unknown.
Simon knows nothing of what the Legion truly is, what a blood-soaked path means, what the Contract demands, or what handicaps it carries.
Yet.
“I have a question.”
A question came back instead of an answer. Peer’s face twisted in displeasure.
[Speak.]
“I don’t know what use you are. Is this Legion of yours strong?”
Thud.
Peer’s footsteps stopped.
[Heh. Hehehehehehe! Fwahahah! Kehehehe! Kahahahahahahahaha!]
Clang! Clang!
The air itself resonated, and dirt cascaded from the ceiling.
Use? Use, you say!
This boy was not wandering in doubt and fear—he dared to “evaluate” the Legion!
[A magnificent question, human! Strong, you ask? If you wish, shall I topple even Kizen itself?]
Grooooooooo!
From every corner, the haunting cries of the dead echoed through the chamber. It was a terrible sight, yet Simon’s expression remained unmoved.
[Excellent! I shall answer your question!]
Peer withdrew his power and spoke.
[Your father once dissolved the Legion already! And I was sealed away here! But when you awakened me, the administrator, anew, the Legion entered its “first moment.”]
“First moment.”
[Indeed! But should we gather the scattered forces of the Legion and restore our former strength…]
The corners of Peer’s mouth lifted.
[None on this continent shall be able to stop you.]
“Good.”
Simon nodded.
“I will make a contract.”
[Kehehehehe!]
Peer wrapped his arms around Simon’s waist and leaped upward, ascending onto the altar.
[Place your hand upon my “Core”!]
Peer’s ribs parted, and from within emerged a mass of dark magic pulsing like a heartbeat.
Simon obediently raised his palm.
[When this contract is sealed, your entire life shall change! Are you not afraid!]
“There is nothing to fear.”
Simon spoke without hesitation.
“If you truly are my father’s army, then it is only natural that I reclaim you.”
[Kahahahaha! Excellent! That is precisely the spirit required!]
Outwardly an ordinary boy, composed and humble, yet bearing the rare mark of a hegemon’s nature in moments of expression.
‘He raised his son well! Richard! This one is different from you!’
His current mastery of dark magic appeared crude, yet he possessed tremendous potential. And unlike Richard, his sense of self and his emotions were properly formed—a being complete in spirit and mind.
Peer was thoroughly satisfied with this boy.
[From this moment forward, we shall proceed with the contract! Do not die, Simon Polentia!]
