Chapter 39
Crunch—crunch—crunch—
Tae-woo, Ye-rim, and Moon So-ryeong climbed the mountain path carpeted with fallen leaves.
Though soldiers had worn a faint trail through here, years of neglect had allowed grass to grow waist-high across the entire route.
In some sections, the vegetation towered above human height, making passage nearly impossible.
Slash—slash—
Moon So-ryeong and I had to advance by cutting through the grass with our blades, bit by bit.
“Don’t you have any questions about the company?”
Moon So-ryeong asked.
I blinked and looked at her before answering.
“Honestly, I have tons of questions. Like how my grandfather came to run such a company in the first place, and how we manage to generate 750 billion won in annual revenue, and so on and so forth.”
“The reason for the revenue is simple. It just means there are an insane number of spirits in this world.”
“There certainly are plenty.”
“Right. Since you have spiritual sight, you’ve probably seen a lot of ghosts yourself. Just how many there are.”
“But it’s still surprising that an exorcism company operates on such a large scale. Most people don’t even seem to know about it.”
“Exactly. Not many people know the true nature of our company. In fact, most people think we’re just a trading company. But the truth is, we operate on a dual system, so people’s perception isn’t entirely wrong either. We do trading alongside exorcism.”
“Is that so?”
“You had no idea about our company at all. The Founder never told you anything about it?”
“No. Nothing at all.”
“That’s quite remarkable. I heard he raised you directly when you were young, yet he managed to keep this secret so well.”
Moon So-ryeong shrugged and gave me a brief explanation of the company’s history.
My grandfather, Kim Jun-mo, the Founder.
Just as I had witnessed, he was indeed a renowned shaman in Gangwon Province.
But as his exorcism skills gained notoriety, he began operating nationwide.
During this time, he accumulated considerable wealth.
With Kim Jun-mo at the center, multiple shamans formed a network, eventually creating an exorcism group in the form of an “Association.”
It was through this connection that Kim Hong-seok came into the picture.
He was originally the representative of a trading company that imported foreign goods and exported domestic products, but apparently he had spiritual sensitivity and suffered greatly from constantly seeing ghosts, eventually falling ill from it.
To cure his spiritual affliction, he decided to undergo a shamanic initiation—and after much searching, he found his way to Kim Jun-mo, the Founder.
The two formed a connection and decided to go into business together, establishing Guihon Trading.
Since its founding, Guihon Trading has consistently maintained a dual operational structure.
The exorcism business, based on the exorcism group centered around Kim Jun-mo, the Founder.
And the trading business, utilizing the infrastructure that Kim Hong-seok had built while running his trading company.
While operating this dual-structured company, Kim Jun-mo, the Founder, came into contact with people of wealth and status—congressmen, celebrities, entrepreneurs, and the like—naturally allowing the company’s revenue to skyrocket.
As this situation continued for several years, the company’s revenue itself tilted toward the exorcism side, and Kim Jun-mo naturally ascended to the position of Founder.
Kim Hong-seok took on the role of Vice Chairman while continuing to maintain the trading business that needed to operate as a front.
The business continued to grow.
As connections formed with government officials and conglomerates, rumors of Guihon Trading spread overseas, and business trips abroad became increasingly frequent.
In response, Founder Kim Jun-mo mobilized the overseas networks that CEO Kim Hong-seok had cultivated through his trading ventures, establishing Guihon Trading branches in each country.
It was amid this expansion that Founder Kim Jun-mo passed away, leaving a will to transfer the company to Tae-woo.
However, he left instructions that Tae-woo should first master all operational aspects of the business to prevent internal discontent, and only then formally inherit the company.
Until then, Vice Chairman Kim Hong-seok, who held the position at the time, was decided to take over the management of Guihon Trading.
As Tae-woo listened to this explanation, he couldn’t help but tilt his head in confusion.
No matter that I was Founder Kim Jun-mo’s only grandson, I had severed all ties with him for years—could such a massive company really be handed over to me so suddenly?
While they said it was to suppress internal dissatisfaction, even if I entered as a manager and came to understand the company better, surely rumors would inevitably spread among the other employees who had worked here for so long.
As if sensing my thoughts, Moon So-ryeong spoke up.
“Guihon Trading operates on pure merit. If you’re good at catching spirits, anyone can rise through the ranks. The Founder’s decision to make you his successor and pass on the Ghostblade was based on his belief that you’d perform better than any other employee at Guihon Trading.”
In other words, the Founder had faith that I would excel at exorcism to such a degree that the other employees’ complaints would fade away entirely.
I couldn’t understand what basis he had for that belief.
But Moon So-ryeong knew the basis lay in the Ghostblade itself.
Having witnessed my performance with the Ghostblade firsthand, she could deduce that once I reached the level of being able to sense spirits and engage in combat without relying on IT devices, I would become the most skilled exorcist in all of Guihon Trading.
That was something no one else could do for me.
It was something only I could awaken within myself.
“But if you’re taking on commissions worth hundreds of millions and generating revenue through trading, wouldn’t the revenue exceed 750 billion won? It seems like a rough estimate.”
I asked.
“That’s the official revenue. In reality, it’s far greater than that.”
Moon So-ryeong answered.
I tilted my head, not immediately grasping what she meant.
As a brief silence fell, Ye-rim spoke up at last.
“But something feels off. I don’t hear a single insect chirping.”
She asked while surveying her surroundings with heightened alertness.
“There’s a strong one around, so all the insects and animals are hiding.”
Moon So-ryeong answered finally.
That was when it happened.
Screeeeeeeech—
An eerie sound began echoing from somewhere in the darkness.
Moon So-ryeong and Ye-rim simultaneously raised their weapons, scanning their surroundings with practiced vigilance.
Tae-woo immediately checked his Ghost Radar as well.
Yet nothing appeared in the immediate vicinity.
Then Ye-rim gave a hand signal without delay.
“Captain, over there.”
At her words, Moon So-ryeong turned her gaze in that direction.
What came into view was a Soldier Ghost draped limply across a tree branch some thirty meters away, like laundry left to hang.
As the flashlight beam converged on it, the Soldier Ghost slowly twisted its head toward our group.
“What the hell is that thing?”
Moon So-ryeong nocked an arrow with remarkable fluidity and drew the bowstring taut.
Twang—
The moment she released, the arrow flew with absolute precision, embedding itself perfectly into the spirit’s skull.
Splat—
Then something extraordinarily grotesque occurred.
Sssssssqueeeeelch—
The Soldier Ghost’s body draped across the tree began melting like ice cream.
Its elongated intestines and organs remained suspended on the branch while the upper and lower halves of its body drooped downward, separating as they fell.
Fzzzzzzzzzzzzz—
The upper and lower body dissolved into black smoke, and soon the entrails hanging from the tree transformed into black smoke as well.
That was the moment.
Beep—
Blue dots began cascading across my Ghost Radar like dominoes.
Spirits had revealed themselves within a twenty-meter radius of this location.
“They’re here.”
I spoke while surveying the area around us.
Yet the spirits themselves remained invisible.
Only dense trees and thick undergrowth were visible.
“Above.”
Moon So-ryeong spoke quietly.
At her words, I lifted my gaze upward.
“Gasp.”
I was momentarily taken aback.
Every tree surrounding us was littered with spirits of similar form to the one I’d just witnessed.
Tae-woo, Ye-rim, and Moon So-ryeong pressed their backs together, weapons trained outward on all sides.
Grrrrrrrrrrgh—
Strange sounds, as if emanating from a ghost’s throat, echoed from all directions.
The way they resonated subtly, like surround sound, was utterly grotesque.
“What’s happening here?”
Ye-rim asked.
“You should know by now, being a manager.”
Moon So-ryeong spoke curtly, then added:
“They’re trying to drive us out.”
The moment her words ended, the ghosts’ heads snapped in unison toward Tae-woo’s group.
Screeeeeeech—
Their mouths gaped open grotesquely as blood began to pour forth.
Blood tears streamed from their eyes like a faucet left running.
Shrieeeeeek—
It was then that it began.
The upper body of the Soldier Ghost hanging from the tree stretched grotesquely, its intestines and organs fully exposed, as it lunged toward Tae-woo’s group.
Its lower half remained caught in the tree, extending only its waist like a tentacle to attack them with its upper body.
As it stretched, the skin of its elongated waist tore open, revealing its organs in full view.
Pap-pap-pap-pap pap-pap-pap-pap—
Ye-rim immediately opened fire.
Moon So-ryeong also unleashed arrows at the approaching ghosts.
Thwack thwack thwack—
The ghosts struck by the purified pellets and arrows all vanished.
These ghosts seemed to be at most Grade 2 spirits.
Shing—
Tae-woo’s Ghostblade also began to cut through the spirits.
Whoosh—
As I swung my blade at the approaching ghost in midair, it gleamed, reflected by the moonlight.
Shing—
The blade split the ghost’s body in half, and it scattered into black smoke in the air.
Another ghost then approached me.
I lowered my stance, sidestepped, then leaped up and brought my blade down.
Shing—
The ghost, severed at the waist, fell to the ground and dissolved into black smoke.
Swish-swish-swish-swish-swish-swish-swish-swish—
Yet the spirits’ advance showed no sign of stopping.
Tae-woo gripped his blade and assumed a combat stance.
Glint—
In that instant, moonlight reflected off the sword, briefly illuminating the spirits’ faces.
The charging spirits suddenly flinched and halted.
It was a reaction I had never witnessed before.
“What the—?!”
Tae-woo couldn’t immediately grasp the reason.
The flash mounted on his smart glasses was flooding the surroundings with light, so he couldn’t directly sense the moonlight reflecting off the blade’s edge.
Thud—
In that fleeting moment of contemplation, a spirit’s upper body surged from behind and wrapped around him in an embrace.
Kyaaakyaakyaakyaakyaakyaa—
The spirit pressed its face against my ear, emitting a grotesque sound.
Simultaneously, an overwhelming chill swept across my earlobe, the nape of my neck, and down my spine.
“Ugh!”
The spirit embracing me from behind couldn’t be severed with the Ear-Cutting Blade.
I drew the Blood Essence Sword from my waist and immediately stabbed the shoulder of the spirit that refused to release its grip.
Squelch—
As the spirit’s arms went slack, I twisted my body and cleaved through its head.
Shwaaaack—
The moment the spirit’s head severed, it dissolved into black smoke and vanished.
That was precisely when—
Rustle rustle rustle rustle—
The undergrowth between the darkened trees thrashed violently.
The instant Tae-woo turned his head toward it, a blue dot appeared on the radar, approaching at tremendous speed.
“What is—?”
The moment those words escaped my lips—!
A grotesque spirit with a centipede-like elongated torso and countless long arms jutting from its body burst through the brush and hurled itself at Tae-woo.
