Chapter 12
“Do you sense something?”
Ye-rim asked.
Tae-woo nodded and pointed toward the Pawnshop.
“I’m detecting something in the Pawnshop and the Corridor floor right now. It feels like a much stronger wavelength than anything we’ve encountered so far.”
When we entered this place, blue light had spread in a mist-like form, obscuring our vision to some degree, but it was only mildly obstructive—not an intensely deep blue.
However, the blue light visible inside the Pawnshop and on the Corridor floor took the form of something highly concentrated, a dense azure glow.
That meant there was a spirit far more powerful than anything we’d encountered until now.
Ye-rim nodded and spoke.
“Understood. Stay close behind me.”
She then approached the slightly ajar Pawnshop door, one step at a time.
Creeeeak—
With one hand, she pulled the door open and aimed her gun inside.
Tae-woo pressed close behind her and peered into the Pawnshop.
As we entered through the door, the first thing visible was a standing table arranged like a bank counter, and iron bars separating the space for visitors.
Iron bars and glass were installed above and along the sides of the table, blocking everything off, but a small opening was left through which only hands, items, and money could be exchanged.
It seemed items were passed through that opening and money was received.
A small sofa sat in the visitor’s area, and in the corner, a dead plant sat in a broken pot.
The calendar hanging on the wall had also stopped thirty years ago.
As they entered, they examined the area beyond the iron bars, past the standing table that separated the spaces.
Large display shelves for storing items stood like bookshelves in a library.
This was where items were kept once received.
Of course, it appeared no items remained.
“The way to go deeper is— Ah, here it is.”
She pointed to a small iron door in the corner.
It was a door that led into the back area where the item storage display shelves were located.
As she approached and opened the door, it swung open with a loud metallic sound.
Gulp—
Tae-woo swallowed hard and surveyed his surroundings.
As we entered, the blue light became so intense that I turned off my radar again.
It was right then.
Clank—
A sound of something falling echoed from within.
Ye-rim immediately aimed her gun in that direction and moved forward.
At the same time, she gestured for Tae-woo to search the other side.
He nodded and checked the display shelf on the opposite side from Ye-rim.
‘This is incredibly filthy.’
The wooden display shelves were covered entirely in dust and mold.
Not only that, but torn papers—whether they were price tags that had been attached to stored items—were scattered everywhere.
Ye-rim was witnessing a similar scene.
She alternated her gaze between the shelves on both sides and moved toward the corner where the sound had originated.
And there, wedged between the display shelves, she discovered a male figure standing motionless, facing the wall.
It was a ghost.
The instant she was about to pull the trigger—the ghost grabbed Ye-rim’s shoulder and shoved her violently.
“Ugh!”
She gasped as she was forced backward.
The trigger was inadvertently pulled, and bullets flew toward the display shelf and ceiling.
Bang, bang, bang—
Caught off guard, Tae-woo immediately rushed toward the commotion.
In that moment, Ye-rim, shoved by the ghost, collided with the iron bars and glass above the standing table.
Crash—
The glass window shattered, producing an ear-splitting sound.
She let out a pained cry, but the ghost paid no mind, glaring at her with wild eyes.
Thud—
Then it seized her throat with both hands and began to strangle her.
Under the sudden pressure, Ye-rim dropped the gun she was holding.
Clatter—
She reached for the fallen gun, but with her throat being choked and her body gradually being lifted, she couldn’t possibly reach it.
In the meantime, Tae-woo rounded the display shelf and spotted the ghost and Ye-rim.
The situation looked unmistakably dangerous.
The ghost was strangling Ye-rim’s throat with both arms, pressing her against the iron bars atop the standing table.
“Hey, hey! Ghost!”
Tae-woo shouted sharply and drew his exorcism blade.
At the same time, the ghost turned around.
Disturbingly, its head rotated 180 degrees instead of its body turning.
Its gray skin and bean-like pupils were grotesque.
Sparse, repulsive hair and black veins covering its entire face.
Its tattered clothing looked incredibly filthy.
“Let the director go and fight me instead!”
Tae-woo shouted.
The ghost’s lips trembled rapidly as it stared at Tae-woo, emitting a strange sound.
Scritch-scritch-scritch-scritch-scritch—
It was an eerie noise, like the sound of rubbing newspaper against itself.
Whoooosh—
In an instant, the ghost twisted its body and lunged toward Tae-woo with supernatural speed.
The movement was extraordinarily fast.
“Ugh!”
Tae-woo swung his sword vertically.
With display cases on both sides and the space cramped, a horizontal slash would have been difficult.
Whoooosh—
But the ghost anticipated this, clinging to the ceiling like a spider and scurrying toward Tae-woo’s back.
Thud—
In that moment, Ye-rim stumbled forward, breathing heavily.
Her breath wasn’t returning to normal.
Yet with her brow furrowed, she grabbed the pistol that had fallen to the floor and immediately pulled the trigger at the ghost.
Bang-bang-bang-bang—
The ghost scurried rapidly across the ceiling, evading the bullets.
Click—
In an instant, the magazine emptied and Ye-rim’s pistol slide locked back.
As she quickly swapped magazines, the ghost lunged at her again.
“Come at me instead!”
Tae-woo burst forward immediately.
His speed clearly exceeded that of any human.
Though the space was narrow and cramped, the moment Tae-woo surged forward, dust and debris around him swirled violently into the air.
Ye-rim concealed herself beneath a standing table, and the ghost on the ceiling hurled itself toward her.
And Tae-woo likewise threw himself at the ghost.
“Aaaaagh!”
He thrust his sword into the ghost.
Whoooosh—
As the Ghostbane Blade pierced through the ghost’s body, Tae-woo collided with the iron bars atop the table, tangled with the specter.
Crash—bang-crash—
The remaining glass shattered completely, and the rusted iron frame tore free from its mounting.
Tae-woo tumbled toward the entrance with the Ghostbane Blade still impaling the ghost, scattering iron bars and glass shards in his wake.
Whoooosh—
The ghost vanished into black smoke right before Tae-woo’s eyes.
Only then did Tae-woo, who had torn through the iron bars with his entire body, begin to feel the pain coursing through him.
“Ughhhh.”
He lay on the ground, twisting his body as he let out a groan.
“Tae-woo, are you alright?”
At that moment, Ye-rim rose and looked down at Tae-woo, who lay beyond the standing table.
Tae-woo gave a thumbs up to show he was fine, but his expression still betrayed his pain.
“Thank you.”
She hurried over to him and helped him up as she spoke.
In doing so, she recalled the movements Tae-woo had just displayed.
The space had been incredibly cramped, but the speed he’d exhibited was unmistakably beyond human capability.
This was certainly the will of the Ghost Radar at work—yet the fact that he’d managed to handle it and dispatch the ghost was undeniably impressive for a newcomer.
“How are you now? Are there any others?”
Ye-rim asked.
Tae-woo activated the radar again to scan the surroundings.
Now only a blue light shimmering from the 2nd Floor Corridor floor remained.
“Something’s showing up on that floor. Can a ghost be in the floor itself?”
Tae-woo asked.
The ghost wasn’t lying on the floor, nor was it reaching out with its hands.
It was just an ordinary floor, yet blue light emanated from a specific spot in the middle of it.
Then Ye-rim spoke.
“So it’s not being detected across the entire floor, but only in a specific location?”
“Yes. Right in the middle of the corridor. About fifty centimeters? Maybe a meter in size?”
Tae-woo pointed at the blue light visible through his smart glasses as he answered.
“That Building Owner Ghost died in that spot. It’s hiding because it thought we came to capture it.”
She finished speaking and pulled something black from her pocket.
It was a small metal plate the size of a card.
But when she manipulated it slightly, it clicked and transformed into a square incense burner the size of a paper cup.
“When they hide like that, we have to burn incense for them. Otherwise, they won’t come out.”
She knelt on one knee and retrieved a small cloth pouch from another pocket.
It was sand.
She poured the sand lightly into the incense burner, then pulled out a long incense stick and lit it.
She fanned the smoke gently and planted the incense in the sand within the burner.
“That smart glasses is impressive. If you didn’t have it, we wouldn’t have found the one hiding.”
Ye-rim gestured toward Tae-woo’s smart glasses as she spoke.
This was the first moment the Ghost Radar installed within it had received praise.
Whoooosh—
The smoke gradually spread, but there was still no response.
A few minutes passed like that.
“This is actually working, right?”
Tae-woo whispered the question.
Ye-rim gestured for him to be quiet.
That was when it happened.
Tae-woo’s radar responded.
The blue light shimmering across the floor began to glow with far greater intensity.
“Huh?”
When Tae-woo inadvertently made a sound, Ye-rim turned her head toward him.
It was at that exact moment.
Thud—
Something fell from the ceiling directly above where the blue light was shining.
It was the corpse of a man hanging by his neck.
“Gasp!”
Even Ye-rim flinched in shock and stumbled back, while Tae-woo’s heart nearly stopped.
The tongue hung down to the chest, the eyes were rolled upward, and the neck was grotesquely elongated—a truly horrifying sight.
For a moment, Tae-woo wondered if it was a real corpse, but Ye-rim had sensed from the start that it was a ghost.
If something suddenly fell from an empty ceiling without any structural collapse, it had to be a ghost—one hundred percent certain.
But it didn’t take Tae-woo long to realize it was a ghost either.
The ghost’s eyes, which had been rolled upward, suddenly snapped toward Tae-woo with a flash.
Bang bang bang bang!
Ye-rim immediately drew her gun and fired at the ghost.
But the ghost simply dropped through the floor and vanished, only to reappear inside the restaurant and charge straight at Ye-rim.
“Manager!”
Tae-woo shouted, and she swung her gun barrel in that direction.
Bang—
She pulled the trigger, but the ghost had already disappeared.
It materialized between Tae-woo and Ye-rim and shoved them both with tremendous force.
Crash—
Boom—
Tae-woo was hurled into the Pawnshop while Ye-rim crashed into the Restaurant.
Screeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeech—
The ghost standing in the middle of the corridor twisted all its joints in a grotesque manner, alternating its gaze between Ye-rim and Tae-woo.
A pervasive smile lingered across its face.
It seemed to find this situation amusing.
Click—
That was when Ye-rim raised her gun and fired.
Bang bang bang bang bang—
As if anticipating the attack, the Building Owner Ghost concealed itself toward the corridor.
As she sprang to her feet and rushed into the corridor, Tae-woo also rose, grasping the Guichaldo.
Upon stepping into the corridor, the Building Owner Ghost stood with all its joints contorted, glaring at them both.
“Leave. Leave. Leave. Leave. Leave.”
The ghost repeated the same words while writhing its body.
Simultaneously, the whites of its eyes began filling with blood.
“This is a place for the living. If you want to leave, you should be the one to go.”
Tae-woo shouted harshly, raising the Guichaldo.
In that instant, Ye-rim turned her head in surprise at Tae-woo’s transformed demeanor—so different from his usual timidity.
