2. Kartan Radeon Kairos
Episode 15
“Kartan, why won’t you grow no matter how much I feed you!”
In the Room of Nobility, young Kartan was scolded by his Father every day.
“Haven’t I told you countless times that you must grow in order to do noble work like your Brothers?”
A Beast lived in the Imperial Palace. He was young and captivating to an ageless degree, and always taught his Children that they must do ‘noble work’ for the country.
And now it was Kartan’s turn.
“Yes, Father.”
From that day on, Kartan worked harder than anyone else. He never neglected his studies either. Then one day, the Beast, whose hair had turned unrecognizably white, spoke with a voice filled with joy.
“You’ve finally grown! Perfect timing. I was just in need of you!”
Then he drew a Dagger. Kartan asked, trembling with fear.
“F-Father! What are you doing right now?”
“You’re just going to do noble work like your other Brothers. Now, come here quickly.”
Only then realizing the true nature of ‘noble work,’ Kartan ran away. He was no longer his Father. He was just a Beast wearing his Father’s skin. An ugly Beast that maintained his youth by sacrificing his Children!
Running frantically, he collapsed covered in blood.
‘Am I going to die now…?’
He had no strength left to move. It was frustrating to die so meaninglessly in a place he didn’t even know. But all he could do with his injured body was helplessly look up at the Night Sky.
When snow touched his cheek, it felt cold. He couldn’t tell whether what was flowing down his cheek was water from melted snow or tears he had shed. Then he heard the sound of snow crunching underfoot.
Someone crouched down right in front of him.
“Um… are you okay?”
Soon a Girl’s small hand touched his shoulder. A pale green light spread out like vines and enveloped his body. The Girl’s appearance he glimpsed was like a white rabbit.
He felt as comfortable as basking in spring sunlight, and soon his body became light. Before he knew it, his injured wounds had disappeared without a trace.
“What are you?”
Even experiencing it firsthand, he couldn’t believe it.
“I’m asking what you are!”
When he asked again, the cowering Girl stammered in reply.
“Um… it’s a secret that I saved you. If my Ability becomes known, my Parents might sell me…”
Looking at her innocent expression, a sigh escaped him.
“Sigh, then why did you save me? What if I go around telling everyone?”
“Well… you were dying…”
“From now on, never save anyone whether they’re dying or not, understand?”
“Okay, but…”
The Girl couldn’t continue her words, hesitating. It was obvious that her Ability would be discovered soon and she’d be sold off.
“Um, if you go down this Hill, there’s an Orphanage where I stay. Won’t you come too?”
Only then did he realize the Girl thought of him as some abandoned beggar child. It was absurd, but he couldn’t reveal his identity either.
“Well, whatever.”
He had nowhere else to go anyway, so it worked out well.
“I’m Lillian, and you are…?”
“I’m Ka…”
Kartan, who had almost unconsciously said his name, made up something that came to mind.
“It’s Kal.”
“I see, Kal!”
Lillian smiled brightly. Somehow his nose felt ticklish.
Lillian said she had been left at the orphanage by her Birth Mother. Something about coming back for her when things got better. Anyway, life at the orphanage was reasonably satisfactory. Though it was cold and hungry, at least she didn’t have to live in fear of possibly dying.
Then one day, people claiming to be Lillian’s parents came looking for her.
“Father is going to raise me!”
Seeing her happy face, he couldn’t understand why he felt so terrible.
“That’s nice.”
“Yes! I’m so happy!”
Lillian handed him a small Plain Box.
“Take it, this is a token of our friendship.”
“No thanks, take it away.”
Feeling spiteful, he threw the Box away. Then he pulled the Blanket over his head. When he came out after dark night had fallen, Lillian had already left the orphanage with her parents.
Only then did he open the Box. Inside was a Leaf.
“This is a World Tree Leaf, isn’t it?”
The World Tree was a sacred tree that connected heaven and earth, so only one was planted in the Imperial Palace Garden.
‘Only the Emperor of the Empire could possess this, so how…!’
Thinking of Lillian with her Life-Saving Power and the Beast hungry for youth, his vision grew dim.
‘I can’t just let Lillian die like this!’
Lillian was his benefactor who had saved him and his only precious friend. He hurried toward the Imperial Palace. Fortunately, the passage he had escaped through back then was still open.
“Lillian!”
The Beast was nowhere to be seen, but Lillian lay alone on the Bed with the Magic Circle drawn on it.
“Wake up!”
No matter how much he shook her, she wouldn’t wake up. She had clearly been drugged to sleep. Just as he was about to carry her on his back and leave, he came face to face with the Beast.
“Well, who do we have here? Isn’t this Kartan!”
The Beast had aged hideously since he last saw him. Meeting those hungry eyes between deeply carved wrinkles, fear washed over him.
“Let Lillian go!”
“I can’t do that. This child is a treasure sent from heaven for me!”
“No!”
The Beast approached. Feeling terror, Kartan swung the Club he had brought, but it wasn’t enough. The Beast easily dodged and threw Kartan against the Wall.
Crash.
Kartan, who had momentarily lost consciousness, came to his senses from the pain in his forehead. A Fragment from a broken Vase was embedded in his head, and blood was flowing. The Beast looked down at Kartan and sneered.
“How foolish you are, Kartan. Look at that child once. Isn’t she truly pitiful? Her parents had no idea of that child’s value. They didn’t know she was such a great person capable of such noble work and sold her for a pittance.”
Finally, the Beast drew out a Dagger. Just as he was about to stab Lillian while chanting a Spell, Kartan spoke.
“Even if you stab her with that Dagger, you won’t be able to obtain Lillian’s Power.”
The Beast flinched for a moment and turned to look at Kartan.
“What?”
Kartan stood up from his spot, hiding the hand holding the Fragment behind his back.
“I know that Power well because I’ve experienced it. Lillian drew it up from within herself. So you can’t obtain it just by killing her.”
“That’s impossible. Your brothers all did this too!”
“Then why don’t you test it, whether you can obtain the power or not.”
In truth, Kartan didn’t know much about the power Lillian possessed either. Since she seemed uncomfortable whenever power was mentioned, he hadn’t asked about it. He was simply probing the Beast’s most sensitive spot to find an opening.
The hesitating Beast put down his dagger.
“You would know. So how can I make this power mine?”
Kartan recalled when he first learned to hunt. He held his breath and slowly approached his prey.
“Why are you going this far? All the brothers who were sacrificed were Father’s own children.”
“Because they are children of my blood. Only then can I take their life force as my own!! Do you think I enjoyed killing my own children? You all did the most noble thing for me and this Empire! So tell me, how can I have this child’s power?”
There was only one chance. Kartan slashed the Beast’s nape in one swift motion with the glass fragment he held in his hand.
“Urgh! Kartan, you deceived me!”
Taking advantage of the Beast collapsing while clutching his throat, he climbed on top of him. Then he frantically attacked his neck.
“Die! Please just die!!”
Though the Beast struggled, with his injured body he couldn’t overcome Kartan who was driven by desperation. Only after the Beast’s body went limp did the strength leave the hand gripping the glass fragment. The fragment was already embedded so deep in his hand that it wouldn’t fall out.
Kartan staggered to his feet and met Lillian’s eyes. As he approached her, Lillian spoke with a terror-stricken face.
“D-don’t come near me, you monster!”
